What's in a Name?

How many times have you heard this blessing in church?

"The LORD bless you
   and keep you;
the LORD make his face shine upon you
   and be gracious to you;
the LORD turn his face toward you
   and give you peace."

Have you ever heard the last line?

"So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them."

The Lord had Aaron and his sons use this blessing for the Israelites, yet many churches have adopted it into their own liturgy or services. It's no wonder. It's a beautiful blessing and one I think we all might covet. But the key to this verse isn't the beautiful blessing, it is the last line. By giving this blessing to the Israelites on behalf of God, Aaron and his sons are putting God's name on them. They are anointed and set-apart for God and by God, because of this blessing. This means they are to live as a holy people. They have a huge responsibility to live up to - honouring God's name and keeping it holy.

As believers in Christ we have the same responsibility. When we accepted Christ as our Saviour we were also given a new name - that of Christian. Unfortunately, the word "Christian" today has a negative connotation to it because of some people who claim to be Christian and don't really know Christ at all. An example would be Terry Jones and his "church" who spew nothing but hatred every chance they get. Sadly, the news reports people like Mr. Jones all too often and fail to highlight true believers and their message of Christ's love and salvation.

It is time for Christians (real ones) to bear the name of Christ appropriately and with honour. To live in such a way that no one could find fault with them. To honour God. To love our neighbour. To live as Jesus lived.

The name of Christ has been used as a swear word and dragged through the mud for too long. Jesus' name is "the name above all names", to be honoured and glorified. We need to make it holy and wonderful to the world again, before it is too late.
