The Green-Eyed Monster


Have you ever compared yourself to others? How did you feel afterwards? I'll bet if you are honest with yourself, jealousy began to rear it's ugly head, with bitterness following close on its heels. When we compare ourselves with others in regards to abilities, talents or material things we run into the danger of forgetting what God has blessed us with, both spiritually and materially.


In today's reading, Aaron and Miriam complained about the woman Moses had married. This was really just a cover-up for what they were really feeling however. They were jealous that God did not speak to them like He spoke to Moses and so that lead to complaining about Moses. Unfortunately, they voiced their concerns and made God so angry that Miriam was struck with leprosy. They got the point though. Don't speak out against God's servants.
They also failed to realize that God had given them positions of honour too. Aaron was chosen to be high priest before God. A job that God graciously let him keep after he lead the Israelites into sinning by making a golden calf to worship (Ex. 32:1-8). He was lucky God didn't destroy him right there! And Miriam was the first woman prophetess. But Moses was honoured by God like no other man at that time. Moses talked to God face to face and as verse 8 says, "He sees the form of the Lord." That was too much for Aaron and Miriam and their jealousy and bitterness grew.
It's easy to compare ourselves to others. It's easier to become jealous and bitter once we start doing it too. Once that happens, our relationship with the Lord is at risk, because when we envy someone else we are really saying, "God, I'm not satisfied with what you've given me." If you harbour jealousy or bitterness in your heart against another, confess it before the Lord today, remember the blessings God has bestowed upon you and be thankful.
