Let it Snow!

Sometime last year I was listening to Focus on the Family who was featuring a very unique family. John and Marlene Stege, parents of a very spunky, very sociable little girl. They were retelling the story of how their daughter, Hannah, had recently been to Washington, DC and was charming many of the politicians with her bubbly personality. She bounced from office to office, boldly and emphatically telling them of how she came to be. Hannah is a miracle of life! She had been a frozen embryo, a Snowflake. The Stege’s adopted her as a relinquished embryo. My heart was so touched by their story, I had to learn more!
I learned that in 1997, Nightlightâ Christian Adoptions, with the Stege’s, launched Snowflakesä. It is the very first embryo adoption program in history. The focus of Snowflakesä is to reach out to post-infertility families who have been successful in conceiving and giving birth to children through in-vitro fertilization but who are in a place to make a decision about the future of their remaining frozen embryos. One can only imagine the turmoil couples have experienced when facing such an important decision.
Although I had been infertile most of my adult life, I was completely unaware of this amazing parenting opportunity. I had not thoroughly explored the infertility treatments beyond mild fertility pills because we adopted our two oldest children through foster care. This rather new form of “adoption” fascinated me!
Through further research, I discovered eye-opening statistics regarding in-vitro fertilization. During IVF treatments, couples harvest multiple eggs and produce many embryos; embryos that are not used in the first transfer are frozen for future attempts. Frozen embryos represent hope for infertile couples. If the couple conceives without using all of the stored embryos, they may choose to have the remaining unused embryos donated or placed for adoption. It is estimated that 400,000 frozen embryos remain in fertility clinics around the country.
The embryo adoption awareness website says, “Snowflake babies offer hope to childless couples who want to experience the entire child experience from pregnancy to adulthood.” As a result of the Snowflakesä program there have been more than 175 children born to previously infertile couples. What a unique solution to infertility.
I say Let it Snow!
