Note: This is an excerpt from my handwritten journal of April 2006 and re-written for this blog.
John 11:34-35 - From the Story of Mary and Martha. "Where have you laid him?" he asked. "Come and see, Lord," they replied. Jesus wept.
Take these walls that surround me and use them to bring me closer to you. Take my heart that in times feels that it bleeds and use it to bleed for others. Take my tears that cleanse my face that I might drink from your living waters. Take my heart, mind and soul that I may rejoice as your daughter, servant. I love you Jesus. That I may grace each day with those words. I trust you Jesus only through your eyes will I see. You put the pieces of my world together. You make sense of life for me. You are in control. Not as the world dictates what is control. The world seeks proof, evidence, self-gratification, dictatorship, greed, selfishness and pride. Help me look to you always as my only source-- my purpose for just being.
Even though you did not arrive in time for Martha and Mary, it was all part of your plan. Jesus, you knew the miracle that you would perform that day. You knew that you would raise Lazarus from the dead. The family members did not. Mary and Martha sent for you and waited and waited. The minutes seemed like years, the days an eternity and with each passing day their hopes dimmed and their beloved brother Lazarus died. When you arrived, you were visibly and deeply moved by the pain and grief of both Sisters Mary and Martha. So deep was your compassion that you wept all the while knowing that you would bring Lazarus back to life. Yet, you did not shrug off Mary and Martha’s pain which is compassion beyond my own comprehension. A compassion that many times we ourselves overlook with others around us.
Dear Jesus, I know that you look down on my heart. I know you see the miracles of my life and how all of what is yet to come will serve to bring you glory! I take comfort in knowing that just like Mary and Martha; you still care deeply for what they were experiencing. You the “Son of God” the all knowing King of Kings, showed compassion. Who then are we not to show compassion for others in their time of need even when we know that you will move greatly in their lives? For there are moments for weeping and moments of laughter.
As it states in the book of Ecclesiastics, there is a time to mourn and time to celebrate.
I see the big stone in front of the tomb of my life, however, there is nothing impossible for God. Friends, there are areas in our lives that have had to die and need to stay dead - so lets not try to resurrect those things that should stay out of our lives. But there are areas in our lives that God is restoring and rebuilding. We just need to be mindful and listen to God's voice – so that no matter how dire the situation appears, we can walk out of those tomb situations and what appears dead-- now lives and breathes by the sound of God's voice and authority to come forth!
He may not come how or when we want or expect. Know this, Jesus will always come through and work in our lives as he knows best. Thank you Lord for the tears you shed for us for how much more should we not shed for our brothers and sisters in Christ?
Jesus wept for Mary and Martha. Jesus has wept for me. Jesus weeps for you when you may believe that know one else does.
